Introduction

It is needless to say that Tamil cuture and Hindu dharma are same.However some Tamil separatists say that Tamil culture is different from Hindu culture. These articles focus on how Tamil literature especially Thirukkural portrays and represents Vedic values and Hindu Dharma.

About Vedas

“Niraimohi mandhar Perumai perumai nilathu

Marai mozhi kattividum” (Adhikaram: Neethar perumai, 8th Kural)

Meaning of this kural

“ The glory of Fulfilled texts uttered by Great people is shown by the Vedas”

In Thirukkural ,This kural  tells the Glory of Veda. In general, The word “MARAI” is used in Tamil literature to  mention about VEDA. Thiruvalluvar tells about the greatness of Vedas by telling them as Fulfilled words or Texts.

In Tholkappiyam also Veda is mentioned as Marai.

“Niraimozhi Mandhar anaiyirkilarndha Maraimozhi dhane Mandiram Enba”

Here also the same words “Niraimozhi” and “Maraimozhi” used. “Mandhiram” means Veda Mantras.

From these,It is clear that The word “Marai” means “Veda”   (contd..)
