Importance of Dharama and Values

           Dharma plays a vital role in Indian culture. Dharma is primary. Thatswhy it is called as Hindu dharma. Though “Dharma” has many meanings,  “Dharma” means righteousness or right many times.That is doing good or helpful to others.

Dharma in Thirukkural(Aram)

        th Thirukkural has three major divisions

1.Aram(Dharma) 2.Porul(Wealth) 3.Kama(wish fulfillment)

The first major division is dedicated to Dharma.

Let us see one or Two verses from Thirukkural

“Sirappu eenum selvamum eenum arathinunooungu

Aakkam evano uyirkku”

(Meaning: Dharma gives one the best of all,Dharma gives one the wealth, which one is greater than Dharma to one)

“Arathinoonugu akkamum illai adhanai

Marathalin oongillai kedu”

(Meaning: Dharma is best to One,Fogetting Dharma leads to misery)

Dharma in Hindu texts

*“Dharmo Rakshathi Rakshithha”

(Meaning:Dharma protects one who protects Dharma”)

*”Sathyam Vadha Dharmam Chara”

(Meaning: Speak Truth,Follow Dharma)

“Dharmo hi Parmo Loke”

(Meaning:Dharma is primary of all in the world)

Thus it is clear The concept of Dharma is common both to “Thirukkural” and “Hindu scriptures”.
