The Russian invasion of Ukraine had made many young Indians stranded over there with little hope of returning home. Indians especially over 22000 medical students got struck in the war-torn Ukrainian cities. Considering the plight of the students, the central government immediately deployed four teams under the head of a minister each to foresee the safe evacuation of the stranded students. The teams headed by the ministers swiftly sprung into action by coordinating with the neighbouring countries of Ukraine along with the Indian embassies there.
Many students had already moved to the neighbouring nations sensing the imminent war. Others had no clue what to do. By then the Russian invasion had started and made their evacuation almost impossible. Most of them were hiding under makeshift bunkers with their rationed food. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s timely talk with the Russian President allowed such students to safely return home. The Indian government even used its military helicopters to evacuate the students.
Back home, especially in Tamilnadu, the evacuation had been politicised by the DMK government. The state government formed its own Evacuation Panel to make things even worse. The central government was already walking on a tight rope to ensure the safe return of every student. The state government’s unwanted intervention in the matter would have almost jeopardised the whole thing. Thanks to the determination of the central government that all our stranded youngsters had been evacuated with the exception of the loss of life of a Karnataka youth in a cross fire. The present DMK government’s unnecessary interruption in many of the central government endeavours is unwarranted.
