Whenever DMK comes to power, there is power crisis in Tamilnadu. This is further reiterated in the present DMK régime with their callous handling of electricity distribution. The Power Minister Senthil Balaji usually blames the poor squirrel for having walked over electric lines and thereby causing power cuts. This is hilarious and has caused the creation of umpteen number of memes on social media. But recently the minister with a sinister move turned the blame towards the central power grid.
The central government has allotted several coal mines to the state governments to take care of the latter’s power needs. During summer season, the power consumption surges to the peak. This is the time every government chalking out its own plan to tackle the high demand for electricity. The governments should focus on additional coal procurement, increasing the power generation through renewable energy sources and installing more generational capacity.
Tamilnadu has the highest installation of windmills and has one of the largest solar farms in the whole country. Despite all these strategic advantages compared to the other states of our country, Tamilnadu falters in seamless power distribution. This is mainly due to the lack of planning and implementation of the right kinds of projects for the welfare of the people of the state.
Tamilnadu has the maximum need for 16000 to 17000 megawatts per day. The share from the central grid is around 2% of this total consumption. This does not have a huge impact on the alarming situation in the state. The government should have procured power from the private generation companies. There is a chance of the government demanding commission from these companies and that in turn might have resulted in the power cuts.
From 2017, Tamilnadu had not experienced any significant power cuts. It seems the ghost of DMK government’s notorious powercuts during their previous rule looms large on the people of the state. Let that situation does not repeat again and spoil the peace of the common man.
