Ooty: “The Central Government has announced and recognized 6 places in Tamil Nadu as ‘Ramsar’ sites,” Forest Minister Ramachandran said.

In Tamil Nadu, the state government has requested the central government to declare 13 wetlands as ‘Ramsar’ sites. Among them, Chennai Pallikarana Mangrove; Chengalpattu Karikili Bird Sanctuary; Pichavaram mangrove in Cuddalore is recognized as a ‘Ramsar’ site as a wetland of international importance.

Main objective
Last, in 1971, the UNESCO ‘Convention on Wetlands’ was held in Ramsar City, Iran, hence its name.
