Pudukottai: The first jallikattu of the year in Tamil Nadu started yesterday with great fanfare at Dachankurichi near Kandarvakkottai in Pudukottai district. Out of this, 485 bulls were released.
On the occasion of the English New Year and Christmas, Jallikattu is held annually in Dachankurichi on 2nd January. This year Jallikattu was not allowed to be held on January 2, but the district administration gave permission to hold it on January 6.
This year, Tamil Nadu’s first Jallikattu Collector Kavita Ramu, State Law Minister S. Raghupathi and Environment Minister Siva. V. Meiyanathan inaugurated the event. Pudukottai District Commissioner Murugesan presided. Members of Legislative Assembly M. Chinnadurai (Gandharvakkottai), Y. Muthuraja (Puthukottai) and former public prosecutor KK Chellapandian participated in this.
Initially the temple bull, followed by 485 bulls brought from various districts including Pudukottai, Trichy, Thanjavur, Sivagangai were untied one after the other.
