6 places as ‘Ramsar’ sites!

Ooty: “The Central Government has announced and recognized 6 places in Tamil Nadu as ‘Ramsar’ sites,” Forest Minister Ramachandran said.

A consultation meeting was held with the officers of all departments regarding South West Monsoon precautionary measures at the Government of Tamil Nadu Guest House, Nilgiri District, Ooty. After the meeting, Forest Minister Ramachandran told reporters:

In Tamil Nadu, the state government has requested the central government to declare 13 wetlands as ‘Ramsar’ sites. Among them, Chennai Pallikarana Mangrove; Chengalpattu Karikili Bird Sanctuary; Pichavaram mangrove in Cuddalore is recognized as a ‘Ramsar’ site as a wetland of international importance.

In Tamil Nadu, the central government has declared and recognized 6 places as ‘Ramsar’ sites. Thus, he said. District Monitoring Officer Anand Kumar, Collector Amrit, Forest Officer Sachin and many others participated

                           Main objective

Last, in 1971, the UNESCO ‘Convention on Wetlands’ was held in Ramsar City, Iran, hence its name. Ramsar accreditation aims to identify and protect wetlands around the world, i.e. places that provide habitat for waterfowl. The importance of Ramsar sites is that their main objective is to create and maintain an international network of important wetlands to protect global biodiversity and sustain human life.
