1749ல் இவரின் தந்தையான சசிவர்ணத்தேவர் இறந்தவுடன் இவர் சிவகங்கைச் சீமையின் ஆட்சிப்பொறுப்பை ஏற்றார். வெள்ளையரை எதிர்த்து விடுதலைக்குரல் கொடுத்த பாளையக்காரர்கள் வரிசையில் இவர் குறிப்பிடத்தக்கவர்.

1752ல் மதுரையை ஆண்ட விசயகுமார நாயக்கர் மீது பரங்கியர் கேப்டன் கோப் தலைமையில் போர் தொடுத்து கைப்பற்றினர். அதையறிந்த முத்துவடுகநாததேவர் மதுரை மீது போர் தொடுத்து அங்கிருந்த கேப்டன் கோப்பையும் அவர் படைகளையும் விரட்டியடித்து மீண்டும் விஜயகுமார நாயக்கரையே மதுரை மன்னராக பதவி அமர்த்தினார். இதனாலேயே நவாப், பரங்கி மற்றும் கும்பினி படைகளுக்கு சிவகங்கை மீது கோபம் இருந்தது. இச்சமயத்தில் கும்பினியர் தலைவனாக லார்டு டீகார்ட் என்பவன் பதவியேற்றான். முதல் வேலையாக முத்துவடுகநாததேவர் சிவகங்கை சார்பாக கும்பினியருக்கு திரை செலுத்த வேண்டும் என்று தூதனுப்பினான்.
அதை முத்துவடுகநாததேவர் மறுத்ததால் “கான்சாகிப்” மூலம் கொலை மிரட்டலும் விட்டுப் பார்த்தான் டீகார்டு. இரண்டுக்குமே இவர் பணியாததால் 1763ஆம் ஆண்டில் மன்னர் காளையார் கோவிலுக்குச் சென்ற சமயம் பார்த்து சிவகங்கை மீது போர் தொடுத்து சூறையாடினான். இதையறிந்த முத்துவடுகநாதர் கலவரத்தைத் தடுத்து கான்சாகிப் என்ற மருதநாயகத்தை விரட்டினார்.

அதே நேரத்தில் பரங்கிப்படை ஒன்று இராமநாதபுரத்தைக் கைப்பற்றியது. அப்போது இராமநாதபுரத்தின் பரங்கித் தளபதியாக மார்டினசு பொறுப்பேற்றான். அதற்கு உதவியவன் இராமநாதபுர தளபதிகளில் ஒருவனான இராயப்பன் என்றவனே. தனக்கு முத்துவடுகநாததேவர் மந்திரி பதவி அழிக்காததால் தான் அவன் இந்தத் துரோகச் செயலில் இறங்கியதாகத் தெரிகிறது. அதன்பிறகு இதுவரை சிவகங்கைக்குக் கட்டாத வரியைத் திருப்பித் தருமாறும் இராமநாதபுரத்தைக் குடக்கூலிக்கு தருமாறும் செய்தியனுப்பினான். அதற்கு மறுத்து இராமநாதபுரத்தின் மீது படையெடுக்க மறவர் சீமையை சேர்ந்தவர்களின் உதவியை நாடினார் முத்துவடுகநாததேவர்.

மறவர் சீமைப் படைகளுடன் சேர்ந்து பரங்கியர்களின் துப்பாக்கிப் படைமீதும் பீரங்கிப்படை மீதும் போர் தொடுத்து இராமநாதபுரத்தை மீண்டும் தன் ஆட்சியின் கீழ் கொண்டுவந்தார். இனிமேல் வடுகநாதரை வெல்ல முடியாது என்றறிந்த பரங்கியர் அன்றிரவே சிவகங்கை மீது இனி போர் தொடுப்பதில்லை என சமாதானம் பேசினர். அதை உண்மையென வடுகநாதர் நம்பினார்.

சமாதானம் என்று கூறியதால் பாதுகாப்புகளைக் குறைத்து விட்டு இதுவரை இறந்த வீரர்களுக்கு அஞ்சலி செலுத்த காளையர் கோவிலுக்குச் சென்றுவிட்டார் வடுகநாதர். இதையறிந்த பரங்கிப்படை தன்னை இரண்டாகப் பிரித்துக் கொண்டு ஒன்றை காளையர் கோவிலுக்கு முத்துவடுகநாதரைக் கொல்ல பான்சோர் என்ற பரங்கித் தளபதியின் கீழும் மற்றொரு பிரிவை மருது சகோதரர் படை மீதும் செலுத்திப் போர் தொடுத்தது. கோவிலுக்குச் சென்றதால் ஆயுதம் எடுத்துக் கொள்ளாமல் சென்ற வடுகநாதரை பான்சோர் துப்பாக்கியால் சுட்டுக்கொன்றான்.

பிடித்த உடனே சுடபடவில்லை முத்துவடுகநாதரை. முதலில் அவர் கைகள் இரண்டையும் வெட்டினராம். கால்களால் எட்டி உதைத்தாராம்.. கால்களையும் வெட்ட வாயில் ஒழித்து வைத்த இரும்பு போன்றவைகளை ஆயுதங்களை எல்லாம் எதிரிகளின் மேல் துப்பினாராம். முடிவில் துப்பாக்கியால் சுட்டிருக்கின்றனர். சமாதானம் பேசுவதாக பொய் கூறிவிட்டு கோவிலுக்கு ஆயுதமின்றி சென்ற நேரம் பார்த்து முத்துவடுகநாதரை கொன்றுவிட்டு சிவகங்கையும் காளையர்கோவிலையும் வெற்றி கொண்டதாக பரங்கியர் தம்பட்டம் அடித்துக்கொண்டனர். அந்த சதிச்செயலுக்கு லண்டன் நகரவாசிகள் வெட்கத்துடன் வெளியிட்ட ஆங்கில நாளிதழ் செய்திகளே சாட்சி.
